• Hello all, I just swapped my Telecaster for a S1620 ( In my path through the jungle of Ibanez models I have had good use from this site. Thank you to the keepers :-)

The S1620 has the ZR bridge. I have a question regarding the bridge height adjustment. The adjustment is done by screwing the bridge posts in/out using a 3mm Allen key. But what about the nuts just below ... should they be loosened during this? Not so according to the manual ... but aren't they locking nuts of some kind? Thanks for your input.

    • Oh, by the way - the description for the S1620 say that the model has 24 frets, which is not the case for the one I have, nor for the guitar shown in the article. Either of the two has 22 frets.

    • First, thanks for pointing out that error. We actually had it listed as 22 frets in the spec table, but it was wrong in the description. It's been corrected now — S1620.

As for adjusting the height of the ZR, you don't need to touch those two outer nuts, just use a 3mm allen wrench. Turning that counterclockwise will raise the unit and clockwise will lower it.

The catch is that you don't want to do it when the trem is under tension. So you'll want to detune your strings until they're pretty slack. Otherwise you'll get a ton of resistance. I actually broke one of these bolts trying to adjust it under tension.

Finally, thanks for your kind words. The reason the site exists is to help make sense of the embarrassment of riches Ibanez has bestowed us.

I hope you enjoy that S1620. I've got a Premium S970CW that I play quite a bit. The ZR is my favorite of all of Ibanez's trems; it really hurt when they discontinued it. The S models are so smooth, the only thing I don't like about them is the ugly (IMO) bezel around the pickup selector.

    • Thanks for the info and for sharing your experience. I was actually hunting for a S970 when I got tempted by this S1620 :-)

    • Well actually a S970WRW Until now I didn't realise that they differ with regards to the bridge also. I think that the wenge neck looks super cool, even if they dont get very high scores among the reviewers on the net.

    • I've never played one of those wenge necks, but I don't really love the look. As far as the bridge, in my opinion the ZR is far superior to the Edge Zero II of the S970WRW.

I really love the neck on my S970CW. I think that's the main reason why I find myslef choosing to play it so often. I bought it on a whim as it was priced really aggressively in a local sale. I thought I'd end up flipping it, mostly because I didn't think an Indonesian Premium would be as good as a Japanese Prestige.

Good luck with your guitar and let us know if you have any other questions.
