"Talk" pages are a place where wiki users can share notes about an article. They should not be considered as part of the article itself. As such, they are not held to the same editorial standards as normal article pages and may contain opinion.
This particular comment was not written by myself (in fact it was written well before I even became aware of this wiki's existence). Rather, it was written by a wiki user who chose not to create an account (i.e. an anonymous user).
I have done two things to address this situation:
1) I've retroactively "signed" the comment and attributed it to the IP address from which it was submitted.
2) I've changed the settings of the wiki to preclude editing of any pages by anonymous users.
This second action was taken after a review of the usefulness of edits made over the past year or so that I've been involved with this wiki by anonymous users. Most of these are "junk" edits (adding categories inappropriately, adding clear nonsense or gibberish, etc.) that have to be reverted. The other benefit this change will have is that it will make it easier for editors to reach out to each other.
I'm not enamored by erecting barriers to entry to the wiki, but the account creation process is not onerous and so I feel that this step makes sense. I'll assess its impact on wiki participation going forward and continue to evaluate the value of leaving this restriction in place.
Lastly, as far as what to do about this comment: It represents the understanding/ opinion of a single wiki editor and both the fact that it is (now) signed and that it appears on a Talk page should make this clear to most users. If another editor would like to present a divergent opinion or understanding on the topic, the best way to do that would be to post a reply on that Talk page.
Should you choose to do so, please be aware that ending a comment with ~~~~ will automatically add a signature and timestamp.
