The SML721 is a multi-scaleS series solid body electric guitar introduced by Ibanez for 2023. It is produced in Indonesia as part of the newly introduced Axe Design Lab line.
The SML721 features a sculpted nyatoh body bolted to a maple and walnut neck with a thin Wizard profile and a rosewood fingerboard with 24 Jescar EVOgold fanned frets and white step offset dot position markers. Components include a pair of Ibanez Q58 humbucking pickups with gold covers, individually mounted Mono-rail fixed bridges, and locking Gotoh tuning machines. The nut is set perpendicular to the neck and the frets are fanned to provide a 25½" (648mm) scale on the low (bass) string and a 25" (635mm) scale on the high (treble) side.
The SML721 employs a dyna-MIX10 switching system (see diagram below) with an "Alter switch" toggle which allows the user to access ten distinct tones. The Alter switch appears to tap one coil of the humbucker (as opposed to a traditional coil-split which disables one coil completely) to achieve a sound similar to a single coil without the drop in output which typically accompanies a coil split.
For 2025 the frets were changed to stainless steel.
