The S540FM is an S series solid body electric guitar model introduced by Ibanez in 1992. It was also referred to in some cases as the S540F. It was based on the 540S, which was redesigned and renamed the S540 for 1993. The S540FM was produced in Japan by FujiGen.
The S540FM features a flamed maple top and back on a mahogany body bolted to a maple neck with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with binding and abalone oval position markers. Components include a Lo-Pro Edge double locking tremolo bridge, a locking nut, Ibanez pickups with a pair of humbuckers flanking a single-coil and Gotoh tuning machines.
For 1995 the F1/C3/F2 pickups were replaced by Quantum pickups. For 1998 the neck was changed from a one-piece maple construction to a three-piece maple and bubinga construction and the profile was changed from the Wizard to the Super Wizard.
The S540FML is a left-handed version. The S540BM (burl mahogany top), S540QS (quilted sapele top) and S540QM (quilted maple top) are related models. The S540LTD is another similar model without the exotic top and with sharktooth fretboard inlays.
Ths S540FM was discontinued after 1999, being replaced by the similar S1540FM, which was part of the Prestige line.
