The RG8420ZD is an RG series solid body electric guitar model introduced by Ibanez for 2008. It was made in Japan by FujiGen as part of the high end J Custom line.
The RG8420ZD features a AAA flamed maple top with binding on an African mahogany body bolted to a titanium reinforced maple and walnut neck with Velvetouch treatment and a 24-fret selected rosewood fingerboard with flamed maple binding Tree of Life vine inlays. Components include recessed Easy Access control knobs, two Seymour Duncan humbucking pickups, an Edge Zero double locking tremolo bridge with a locking nut and a removable ZPS tuning stabilizer and Gotoh tuning machines and strap locks.
For 2019 the maple and walnut neck with KTS titanium reinforcing rods was replaced with a maple and wenge construction without titanium rods. For 2020 the fretboard was changed to Macassar ebony.
The RG8420QD which was introduced in 2015 is similar except it has a quilted maple top, different bridge and some additional pickup coil-split switching features. The RG8520ZE is a similar model with active EMG pickups. The RG8520 is a related model with DiMarzio pickups and a Lo-Pro Edge tremolo.
