The RG8 is an eight string RG series solid body electric guitar model introduced by Ibanez in late 2012. It is the first eight string Ibanez RG model sold in large numbers. It is produced in Indonesia.
The RG8 features a basswood (mahogany after 2014 and meranti since 2019) body bolted to a titanium-reinforced maple and walnut 27" scale neck with a 24-fret rosewood (later jatoba) fingerboard with dot position markers. Components include dual Ibanez humbucking pickups and a fixed bridge.
The titanium reinforcing rods were omitted starting in 2014. For 2015 the body material was changed from basswood to mahogany. For 2016 the scale length was very slightly increased. For 2018 the rosewood fretboard was replaced with jatoba. For 2019 the mahogany body was replaced with meranti. For 2024 a mono-unit output jack which has the jack integrated with the metal plate was introduced.
A left-handed version, the RG8L, is also offered as is a version with an exotic poplar burl top, the RG8PB, and another with a flamed maple top, the RG8FM. The RG8004 is a similar model which was offered in 2014 and 2015 which was sold exclusively by the Guitar Center. The RG80E is a related model with EMG active pickups. The RG80F is a related model with Fishman Fluence active pickups. The RG8EX is a similar model with multi-binding around the top.
The RG8 was discontinued after 2023 in all markets except the US, where it continued to be offered.
