AFD5 Cherry Sunburst (more images) |
The AFD5 is a Artfield series solid body guitar model introduced by Ibanez in 1988. The model name was also listed with a "-Z" suffix, which was applied after the finish code, e.g. AFD5CS-Z or AFD5AM-Z.
The short-lived Artfield series was a line of premium guitars which offered innovations such as the new All Access neck joint, multi-ply necks and locking tuners along with three new body shapes in exotic woods.
The AFD5's body shape is a sculpted double-cutaway design with short, symmetrical, pointed horns and rounded shoulders. The overall shape is reminiscent of the Artist series body, but the cross-section is more similar to the Radius series design.
The AFD5 has a mahogany body with a quilted maple top bolted to a mahogany and maple neck with a 24-fret rosewood fingerboard with dot position markers. Components include dual humbucking pickups, an HQ synchronized tremolo bridge and Gotoh locking tuning machines.
The pickups are listed variously as Ultrasonic Ref 6 or IBZ/USA F1.
The AFD5SP is a similar model with a 3 ply bubinga and quilted maple top. The AFD5CT is a similar model with a set-in neck with Tree of Life fretboard inlay. The AFD25 is a related model with similar components but a different body shape.
The AFD5 was produced only in 1988.
