The AFD5 is an Artfield series solid body guitar model introduced by Ibanez in 1989. It was produced in Japan by Iida Gakki.
The short-lived Artfield series was a line of premium guitars which offered innovations such as the new All Access neck joint, multi-ply necks and locking tuners along with three new body shapes in exotic woods.
The AFD5's body shape is a sculpted double-cutaway design with short, symmetrical, pointed horns and rounded shoulders. The overall shape is reminiscent of the Artist series body, but the cross-section is more similar to the Radius series design.
The AFD5 features a quilted maple top on a mahogany body bolted to a mahogany and maple neck with a 24-fret rosewood fingerboard with small dot position markers. Components include a pair of Ultrasonic Ref 6 high output humbucking pickups made by Bill Lawrence, an HQ synchronized tremolo bridge and Gotoh locking tuning machines.
The AFD5-Z is a nearly identical model with DiMarzio IBZ/USA pickups. The AFD5CT is a related model with a set-in neck with Tree of Life fretboard inlay. The AFD25 is a related model with similar components but a different body shape.
The AFD5 was discontinued after 1989 along with the entire Artfield series.
