The Ibanez 540S is an S series guitar model, originally introduced as the PRO540S as part of the Roadstar Pro series in 1987. It was the first S model to be issued by Ibanez, already having 'classic' S features such as the sleek mahogany body, maple Wizard neck and double locking tremolo.
In 1992, another 540S was introduced, later renamed to S540.
Before it was equiped with the now common 5 Way lever switch, the 540S had three individual on/off switches for each pickup. On the first models, the volume pot was a Push-Pull switch for coil tapping the bridge pickup. On later models the bridge on/off switch was a 3 way switch switch with additional coil tap position (position 1: off; position 2: coil tap; position 3: on)
