The 2672 is an Artist series solid body electric guitar model introduced by Ibanez around 1975. It was made in Japan by FujiGen. It was a limited spot model which never appeared in a catalog.
The 2672 features a double-cutaway ash body with German carve edges, abalone purfling and cream binding mated to a set-in maple neck with a 22-fret ebony fingerboard with binding and mother of pearl vintage vine inlays and a "castle" style headstock. Components include a pair of Super 70 humbucking pickups with embossed Ibanez script logo mounted in black pickup rings with individual volume and tone controls and a phase toggle for the neck pickup, a Tune-o-matic style bridge and fancy stop tailpiece, speed knobs with pointers and Smooth Tuner machine heads.
The initial models from 1975 (or early 1976) had an Ibanez script logo on the headstock and lacked serial numbers. The first examples with serial numbers were produced in June 1976 (serial number starts with "F76") and have the Ibanez logo in the block font. Early models (prior to mid-1976) had a standard TOM-style bridge and a fancy stop tailpiece. Later models had a larger Harmonic-o-matic bridge and a standard stop tailpiece with a cloud ornament. For 1977 the Super 70 pickups were replaced with the new Super 80s with "flying fingers" covers. It's possible that the phase toggle was swapped out for a Tri-sound switch at that time, but that detail remains unconfirmed.
The 2671 "Randy Scruggs" is a similar model with a single-cut body and a scroll headstock. The 2681 Bob Weir is a related model with a double-cutaway body with truncated horns. The 2617 is a related Artist model with split block fretboard inlays.
The 2672 is fairly rare with fewer than a dozen examples having been accounted for among the collector community.[1]
