The 2459 (mahogany) is a solid body electric guitar model introduced by Ibanez in 1975. It was made in Japan by FujiGen.It is the initial model in what became the Destroyer series.
The 2459 features a large, angular body modeled on the Gibson Explorer. It has a solid mahogany body mated to a set-in 3-ply mahogany neck with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot position markers. Components include a Tune-o-matic style fixed bridge, stop tailpiece, a pair of humbucking pickups mounted in black pickup rings, a white pickguard, top hat style knobs, and Smooth Tuner machine heads. The output jack is mounted on the side of the guitar.
This guitar was shown by Ibanez at the NAMM Show in Chicago in June of 1975. At the show noted vintage guitar expert George Gruhn, owner of Gruhn's Guitars in Nashville, approached Ibanez and pointed out some minor differences between their guitar and the Explorer they were replicating, including a slightly pointier headstock shape. Gruhn's comments were incorporated into a new version made of Japanese sen (or ash) which quickly supplanted this initial mahogany version.[1]
It remains unknown exactly how many, if any, mahogany 2459s were produced besides the prototype displayed at the show, but the vast majority of those in circulation are the later sen (ash) version.
