1987 was very much the start of the crossover to the signature era for Ibanez: many new body styles were introduced, including the Ibanez JEM and modern RG series as well as the Radius series and Saber series. Ibanez launched a new page in it's history in 1987, offering many more high-end models for professionals, working with prominent guitarists in the US to create new designs that refined and redefined the electric guitar.
1987 was the culmination of a great deal of creativity going on at the Ibanez US design center, and the JEM, RG, Radius, Saber models became classic guitar designs manufactured for decades to come, taking a place next to Fender and Gibson archetypes.
